Roof repair and replacement in Sun Prairie, WI

Sun Prairie has more roofs installed between 2000 and 2015 than anywhere else in Dane County, and most of them are the same builder-grade shingle. When hail crosses Highway 151, whole streets get hit together. We're out here most weeks for repairs, replacements and claims.

Roofing in Sun Prairie

Sun Prairie grew from a small town into the county's biggest suburb in about twenty years, and the roofs show it. Smith's Crossing, Providence, Carriage Hills and the neighborhoods off Grand Avenue and Main Street west of downtown are 2000s–2010s two-stories and ranches with original architectural shingles, mostly the lightest-weight product the builder could buy, installed with four nails and minimal ice barrier. Those roofs are 10–25 years old now. The good ones have another decade; a lot of them don't.

The older streets near downtown — around Main Street, Bristol Street and the high school — are 1900s–1960s houses with steeper roofs, plank decking, and chimneys that have been caulked for fifty years.

The east and north edges toward Highway 19 and Bird Street are the newest construction, and the problems there are builder details rather than age: missing kickout flashing, bath fans ducted into the attic, ridge vents nailed over uncut decking.

Roof repair Sun Prairie homeowners book is also shaped by the open ground. There's less tree cover than Madison, so wind hits the west-facing slopes hard, and hail from storms that build over Columbia County drops on Sun Prairie before it reaches the isthmus.

What we see most here

  • Hail bruising across whole subdivisions after a single May or June storm, followed within days by out-of-state crews knocking doors. Get your own inspection and your own scope before you sign anything.
  • Wind-creased shingles on west and northwest slopes, particularly the lighter builder-grade lines.
  • Pipe boots cracked at 10–15 years on the 2000s houses; the most common repair call in Sun Prairie.
  • Ice dams in the valleys of the cut-up two-stories, where two roof planes meet over a heated bonus room.
  • Attic ventilation gaps — ridge vent installed but soffits blocked with blown insulation, so the attic never breathes.

HOAs and permits

Most Sun Prairie subdivisions built after 2000 have covenants on roof color, and a few require approval for a change. We send the spec sheet and a sample. The City of Sun Prairie requires a permit for a tear-off; it's in our price. If you're comparing quotes after a hailstorm, read our post on questions to ask a roofing contractor first.

Questions we get asked

My whole street got hail. Do I need my own inspection?

Yes. Hail damage varies by slope, shingle line and roof age, and the adjuster's decision on your house is based on your roof, not your neighbor's. We inspect, chalk the test squares, photograph every slope, and give you a scope you own — whoever you end up hiring.

Is a 2005 builder-grade roof in Sun Prairie done?

Often close. The lightest architectural lines installed in the 2000s boom are lasting 15–20 years here, especially on south and west slopes. Some have five years left with a couple of repairs; we'll tell you which after walking it.
